Cleaned fish

If you enjoy the outdoors and foraging for food, especially fishing, then cleaning a whole fish is a life skill! Having gone to both a girls' high school and a women's college, I believe that women should be able to do tasks that are "manly" jobs.  Women shouldn't have to rely on our spouses or the handyman to get stuff done!  I recently came back from Nantucket where I actually fixed a leaky toilet and taught a local Nantucket teenager how to remove a hook from a fish as well as how to clean the fish!  Needless to say, my friend Leo was pretty impressed.

I am one of a few women who love fishing. (Actually, I love catching, but like fishing!) For my fortieth birthday, I brought my family up to Alaska to fish for salmon and halibut, we brought home 400 pounds of fish fillets!

A few months ago, I went out on a party boat and I almost won the jackpot.  My barracuda was a few ounces shy of the heaviest fish.  However, I did catch the most variety of fish!

In Nantucket, it's a wonderland for foraging , both on land and at sea. Sometimes you feel like you're in the Garden of Eden!  Thanks to my friend Jeremy at Bill Fisher's tackle and Steve at Steve Tuna's Adventures I've learned so much about what Nantucket's waters have to offer.  I've caught several stripers, blue fish, porgies or scup and recently, my first bonito. I've also caught and cleaned squid, went crabbing for blue crabs and foraged for mussels and scallops. When the stars are not aligned and I come home with no caught fish, there's always Gliddens Seafood that never disappoints!

I decided to do a blog on what happens when you do catch a fish.  If you are thinking of visiting Nantucket, I highly recommend renting some fishing gear and maybe a guide and go fishing.  You can also just fish for porgies or scup at Brant point where the locals will be happy to give you a few tips on how to fish.

This video shows you how to clean and prep a whole fish when you do catch a fish!  This nothing better than eating fish that's caught within a few hours!  Enjoy!
